We need to have economic alternatives so that people dont sell their children into prostitution.
We have to get beyond just presenting the abuses, and start focusing on solutions. The UN is a very important point in the larger collective. But whether or not it can withstand the needed changes depends on the people and governments of the world. It needs to change or it wont be a viable organization and a newer form will come about.
Although Im not an expert on UN reform, I think its vital to change the way the Secretary-General is elected, to take politics out of it and focus on who is the best humanitarian for that position. I dont think that the US government or the Security Council should be the ones who decide.
To the extent that we feel ourselves to be a part of a larger collective, we get beyond the shortcomings that inhibit us when we sink down into our own personal selves. Often, personal crisis is what shifts your values and helps you begin to see life in a new way. For me its often the difficulties and challenges that have helped me to grow.
